1. I think I have reached the end of the road with Ad-Aware for the time being. I uninstalled A-A 8.0.7, accepted reboot, installed 8.2.1, rebooted. A_A took minutes to load. At the main window, clicked on Scan System. After 10 minutes of high CPU activity I closed A-A. I ran A-A from the Desktop icon, clicked on Advanced mode. Clicked on Scan, then Scan Now. A-A aborted after 7 seconds. KAV showed usual detection; event viewer showed usual Errror 7031. A-A is not on Context Menu. About shows v.8.2.1
2. I did a scan of a small directory on my data drive H: via the Context Menu. Worked AOK. I then did the same for a tree on this drive. A-A scanned 8600 files in 5 minutes AOK. I will try installing the latest version of A-A. ...chris
3. I tested by engaging Internet Lock in ZoneAlarm and Pausing Protection in KAV. A-A still aborted after about 10 seconds (without showing that it had scanned any files). I also tested by engaging Internet Lock in ZoneAlarm and disabling Proactive Defense in KAV. A-A still aborted after about 10 seconds (without showing that it had scanned any files). So it didn't solve the problem. Strange!
4. See topic 27735 for the history with A-A 8.1. As suggested there, I removed 8.1 and installed 8.0.7 (Anniversary Edition). I avoided updating the program (and DLLs) by denying ZoneAlarm permission to access the Lavasoft server. I verified that the A-A program had not been updated: all files in the E:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware tree are all dated before today: the latest is dated 2009-07-03. I downloaded core.zip and extracted core.aawdef to E:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Defs . When I tried to do a full scan, A-A aborted after about 10 seconds. As in topic 27735, the event viewer showed Error 7031: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7031 Date: 2010-03-22 Time: 10:04:23 User: N/A Computer: JOSIE Description: The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Restart the service. The log in Kaspersky Antivirus is interesting: it shows "2010-03-22 10:04:04 Process (PID 700) tried to access Kaspersky Anti-Virus process (PID 1644), but the action has been blocked by the Self-Defense component. No action on your part is required." The time of the event checks with when I tried to run the scan. I conclude that KAV is causing A-A to abort. Going back through the log, I see the same entry in the log (with different PIDs) on the date when I tried scanning with A-A 8.1. This info may help Lavasoft developers. I'm not sure it helps me, because I don't want to lose KAV's Self Defense. Any suggestions? ...chris
5. I removed A-A 8.1 via Add/Remove Programs. BTW In a screen showing "Uninstalling Ad-aware", the Status was "Installing Ad-aware! Uninstall completed OK. I downloaded Anniversary Edition from the link you gave. Filehippo said the version was 8.0.7.0, as did File | Properties. I installed AE via Start | Run. Installation completed; I accepted to reboot. Upgrade Manager showed. It downloaded definitions and some dlls and exes. Dialog box said "Connection error. check your settings". I got dialog box "AAwService.exe - Application failed to initialize becaus Windows is shutting down". The PC rebooted AOK. AE showed "Loading" for at leasta minute. Smart Scan aborted after 8 secs. Event log shows Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7031 Date: 2009-12-21 Time: 15:41:41 User: N/A Computer: JOSIE Description: The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Restart the service. What next? I am willing to have a Lavasoft employee access my computer remotely, but wish to be advised of any changes before they are made. How can I be sure that it is a Lavasoft employee who is accessing my computer? ...chris
6. It is now a month since I reported that Ad-Adaware aborts after scanning for 10 seconds. I realize that this may be a hard bug to find. Is there anything I should be doing on my end? Revert to previous version? If so, where can I find it? ...chris
7. 1. The log file for the date in question (yesterday) is attached, but it does not show the positive. This may because, while Ad-Watch is clearly working, an Ad-Aware Scan aborts the application after 8 to 10 seconds. I reported this earlier. 2. The link to AutoIt 3 is AutoIt 3 3. AutoIt3.exe has been zipped and the zip file is attached. ...chris
8. I think (know?) that the latest definitions falsely find autoit3.exe to contain a worm, Sohanad/D. KAV does not consider it to contain a worm. I have to disable Ad-Watch to be able to run AutoIt scripts. ...chris
9. I just tried to run a Smart Scan. The event is: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7031 Date: 2009-11-13 Time: 23:34:30 User: N/A Computer: JOSIE Description: The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Restart the service. According to Kaspersky Anti-virus and Spybot S&D my system is clean. KAV is updated automatically, i.e. at least daily. Sybot S&D checks for updates daily and downloads them whenever available. Your news is slightly comforting: at least you are not saying that my computer is definitely virused! ...chris
10. Ad-aware 8.1 Free aborts after a few seconds of Fullscan, after 11 seconds in most recent case. Event log shows Event ID 7031: "The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 5 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: No action. " I installed it last night, and am yet to get it to do a scan. I am running Win2K SP4 with Rollup 1, also Kaspersky Anti-virus, Spybot S&D and TeaTimer. Help please. ...chris
11. I am running AA 2008 now. If I have difficulties due to upgrading to AA AE (perhaps Kaspersky will object), I would like to be able to uninstall AE and reinstall 2008. But I don't have a download from which to reinstall 2008. I was hoping that you might know where I could find one. Does this make more sense?
12. Many thanks for your answer. It appears that I will be able to update without any problems, but I might have to revert to Ad-Aware 2008. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of AA2008. Do you know where I can find one?
13. I am a long-time Ad-Aware user, and am being offered an update to AE. But should I upgrade? I know that in order to install KAV, I had to revert ZoneAlarm to an earlier version. KAV wouldn't install any other way. I think I understand why. I have read that newer ZA versions (free and paid) include KAV. In paid versions, KAV shows (renamed to ZA ...) but in the free version, it runs invisibly. Having two AV programs running at the same time is a no-no. So I wonder about AE. I see that the Ad-Aware free page says that AV protection is not included in AE Free, but I am wary: ZA's website says that AV is not included in ZA Free, but it is! I need (and pay for) KAV. Should I upgrade from Ad-Aware 2008 to AE, or will strange things happen? Now for TeaTimer. I have it running. From reading various posts on this forum, I get the feeling that AdWatch may conflict with TeaTimer. Am I correct? What is the best way of avoiding this potential conflict? I look forward to receiving advice. ...chris
