  1. Hi Andy The new direction towards more comprehensive protection makes perfect sense. I'll keep a look out for your 'complementary' version over the coming months. I must point out though that many vendors already offer versions that can be set up to just scan on demand. Indeed, an attractive advantage of Ad-Aware was its real time spyware protection that few (maybe no) other vendors' free versions offer; although I understand why that may no longer be feasible. Quite a few anti-spyware products claim to run alongside another's anti-virus product, although it seems this is becoming rarer probably for similar reasons that drove your new direction. I'll be interested to see where your 'complementary' version sits with this. Thanks again sixdbs

  3. Thanks LS Andy for the thorough advice. It seems like the days are over when Ad-Aware's malware protection would complement another vendor's antivirus product. Since my 'Avast! free' now includes an anti-spyware element and appears to be good at it's job with fewer reported problems, I believe I should remove Ad-Aware from my computers. I'm open to suggestions about this, or other single/combined products, but I'm not sure this is the forum to discuss it. Thanks CeciliaB for your helpful comments over the years that are always polite and dignified regardless of what members may throw at you!

  5. Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3 and regular Microsoft updates. Avast! free antivirus version 7.0.1426 with regular definition updates. (I also disable the anti-virus control process in Ad-Watch-live setting, but it usually re-enables itself after update or sometimes, a restart of Ad-aware) Thanks for your help.
  6. Thank you Cecilia. I'll look forward to hearing about their reply; not only concerning the program crashing but, if they're prepared to comment yet, a simpler Ad-Aware that can be run together with another antivirus program.
  7. I'm sorry, I can't say with certainty when the crashing started. It could well have been about a month ago. Just to be clear, the message reads: "Ad-Aware was shut down unexpectedly and has generated an error report. By sending the error report to Lavasoft you can help us identify the problem and fix it. Click OK to send the report (no other information will be sent) or Cancel if you prefer not to send it." The Ad-Aware icon disappears from the system tray (when you roll your mouse over it) and returns when the update has finished. I did click on "Remind me later" when it appeared and the nag screen didn't re-appear for a month.
  8. I've been getting this problem consistently for more than a week on two XP computers, running either manual or automatic updates. Unfortunately, I can't pin it down to anything specific that I've done. I've not bothered to report it to you until now because I too am hoping for a simpler Ad-Aware that can be run together with another antivirus program, in my case Avast!
  9. I re-booted and then the update appeared to proceed OK. However, now, when I launch Ad-Aware from the tray icon, it prompts me to download a new version which appears to be version 9.6.
  10. The latest update, 9.5.1, still does not resolve the issue of the Anti-Virus Engine in Ad-Watch Live! switching itself back on. The tick keeps arriving back in the checkbox in the Detection Layers section of the Settings panel.   14. I turn off the Anti-Virus Engine in Ad-Watch Live! but it keeps turning itself back on, i.e. the tick keeps arriving back in the checkbox in the Detection Layers section of the Settings panel. Any ideas? I think someone else has reported this problem but I can't find their post. Incidentally, I too am getting Registry and Network protection running in my free version as reported by many others. I'm running WinXP Home SP3, Ad-Aware Free 8.3.1. and AVG Free 9.0.851. Thanks.
  15. FYI, you were right Casey. The problem seems to have disappeared presumably after Ad-Aware updates. I have not uninstalled (or installed) any programs and as far as I can recall, there have been no recent Windows updates immediately prior to me noticing this improvement. Thanks for your help. Jules
  16. Hi Casey I've just uninstalled using Revo on its highest setting (and CCleaner's registry cleaner). As you'd expect there was no problem at this stage but unfortunately, after reinstalling, the problem remains. Although the problem only causes me a minor inconvenience, I wonder if it could indicate that Ad-Watch might not be doing its job properly. Given a solution may not easily be found, would you recommend leaving it running or permanently disabling it and re-enabling Spybot's TeaTimer. I've heard that only one of these two should be enabled and that Ad-Watch would normally be more effective. Thanks for your advice. Jules
  17. Thanks for your response Casey. Pretty sure it's Ad-Watch. If I login and disable it the problem goes away while ever it is still disabled. If I re-enable it then logout, the problem returns for just the next login. Further logout/logins are fine until I either reboot, or disable and re-enable Ad-Watch again. Jules
  18. I am running WinXP Home SP3 and Ad-Aware Free 8.1.1. When I boot my machine, everything works great. The bootup is good, the welcome screen shows everything and I can login to any account. When I logout of the account that I am using, which can be either user or admin, I am returned to the welcome screen, but when I click on a password protected account, the password box appears with no cursor and I cannot enter anything. I can login to an account that does not require a password or do ctr+alt+del twice to login to a password protected account. Then when I logout again everything is fine and the welcome screen goes back to working properly every time. The problem won't recur until the next reboot, login and logout. I have reinstalled Ad-Aware and scans with it, AVG9 Free and Spybot (TeaTimer turned off) all find no items. Any ideas? Thanks.
