Red Dot In Task Bar Problem

Recommended Posts

I am a system admin and I was at my sister's house this weekend. She is reporting the SAME problem. However, no one has intentionally installed a keylogger. She believes it happened while her son downloaded something from Limewire as well. I took a look at her system pretty throughly and it appears that this keylogger "uses" the Pc Pandora and has been repackaged with another name and then it installs on the users PC unknowingly.

Seeing that the 2 messages in this forum has had over 1000 views tells me something nasty is happening besides people installing this intentionally on their pc or people spying on each other. PCPandora has 1 problem with their software. If they want to catch someone doing something on a computer then WHY do they have a RED dot broadcasting it to the possible perp? If the possible perp sees that red dot then they will STOP all activity if they are doing some bad. Duh.

Could you please post a definite instruction list for removal for this on your forum? Something that everyone can use instead of having to read clear through the forum.

Here are some general tips for all users:

1. Rename your admin account on your pc.

2. Use a LONG passcode using numbers, letters, caps and characters.

3. DO NOT surf the web or download using your pc's ADMIN account. Create an unlimited account. Especially for the children.

4. Try not to download illegal stuff from LIMEWIRE.

5. Disable the guest account.

For those that do not know how to rename the admin account or disable your guest account. Then google it and find a web site with clear instructions.

ok, no hassle anymore with online scans - let's try to find these files with another tool...

Download and install Agent Ransack from here: http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/Pag...x?page=download

After you have installed it, Start the Agent Ransack tool (you'll find the program in start > all programs).

In the main Window of Agent Ransack, in the right corner, make sure *Expert User is checked.

There you'll also a couple of fields. The first one: "File name": -- leave that empty --

The second field: "Containing Text". Check the checkbox in front of Containing Text and in the field type: PcPandora

The third field, "Look in": type in C:\ (By default, it should already be C:\ there)

*Check the box to search sub folders

Don't check anything under it where it says Size and Modified. Leave these checkboxes empty.

Then click the "Start Search" button in the right top corner.

This will search your entire drive for files where it contains the strings PcPandora, because I know these files contain these strings.

Then, when the search is done, on top in the menu, you'll find: 'file' > 'save results'

"clipboard" is checked by default, also check "save results for *all files" and Save information *File name"

Do NOT check "contents"

Then click the SAVE button.

Now rightclick in your next reply and choose 'Paste', that will copy and paste the results from Agent Ransack.

Hi Mary,

The PCPandora files are actually easy to delete though. Delete them from Windows Safe mode and the issue is resolved.

But the problem here is, PCPandora uses random files each time and they are dated from 2004 or 2005 (can't remember), so doing a search and sort on the creation of files won't make sense.

I know that 3 scanners do recognise and delete these PCPandora files without any problem (Kaspersky, Avira and F-Secure), so that is the solution.

In this case, Avira wasn't able to properly update here, Kaspersky online wouldn't work and F-secure online woudn't work here either, most probably due to extra restrictions being set here to load/install the ActiveX - or, PCPandora is the cause for this as well.

Since these PCPandora files do have "clear strings" inside, named PCPandora, then Agent Ransack is a good tool to find these files.

Once you know what files they are, you can delete them from Windows Safe mode.

The red dot is there because this repacked version of PCPandora doesn't run stealth.

Good, we found the exe as well...

Do next please..

* Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Where it says: "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved", copy and paste next bold part into that Window:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\disknet.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\actpop.dll

  • Then click the red Moveit! button below.
  • Close OTMoveIt

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.. Then it will reboot your computer.

Even though OTMoveIT didn't ask to reboot your computer - reboot anyway, this since moved files may still be in use.

Then, after reboot, go to next folder: C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles and search for the log: ********_******.log (the * stands for date and time) and post the contents of it in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Ok,

That worked. :(

Check and fix next leftover in HijackThis:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: actpop - actpop.dll (file missing)

* Open OTMoveIt and click the CleanUp! button on top.

In the left pane, it will display a list of tools and other related files which you may have downloaded/used during our cleanup + backup folders that were created with the bad files present. They are not needed anymore, so OtMoveIt will delete them.

Do not edit anything in that Window!

Don't worry if it displays some tools you didn't download/use.

Click Yes when it asks to Begin cleanup process.

Then reboot your computer.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.
