Ad-Aware 2008 won't run with Symantec Endpoint

Recommended Posts

I tried updating to AAW 2008 on computers at work, but Symantec Endpoint blocks the aawservice.exe from running. Haven't been able to find a work around to allow the .exe to run, so I uninstalled and went back to AAW 2007.

No matter what I try, (adding to firewall rules, disabling Endpoint, etc) AAW won't run a scan, just sits there 'waiting for scanner'.

If someone knows a way to work around this, it would be great, but until I can determine how to get this to run with Endpoint, I'll just use 2007 (without updating) and probably eventually stop using this product.

Having just read what Endpoint does, why do you need AAW? Endpoint seems to do what AAW does as well.

Maybe that is why no one has answered this post.

Please advise.

I know that Endpoint is supposed to do the same thing, but in my experience with Ad-Aware I know that AAW catches things that Symantec products ignore.

I used to use Symantec on my home computers, but ran into similar problems with incompatibilites, and besides, AAW will run in about a third of the time that any of Symantec's products will.

I have asked the experts to have a look at this. A bit over my head plus I hate Symantec. I just cleared another 266MB of files off my PC that had been there since early 2004. The only Symantec product I have is Norton Save and Restore.

Hi, I am having the same problem. I uninstalled my ad-aware 3 times and also disabled my symantec endpoint and my firewell, and it still does not scan. I tried to obtain the 2007 again, but when I installed that, it asked if I wanted the 2008 software, I said no, then it did not allow me to do any definitions updates.

Exactly the same problem here. Hope this problem can be resolved soon, as I trust AdAware to find some nasties that Endpoint doesn't.

I've asked for info from Symantec for you - hold tight ;)

Same thing here. From Symantec's Control logs I see it blocks aawservice.exe (even when Symantec Endpoint Protection is disabled!!!), and setting up exception rule for aawservice (or whole folder) to ignore it won't help either.

Hope you get fast reply from Symantec.

I was having this problem, and was talking to tech support by email, as soon as I mentioned that I had SEP installed on my machine, the replies stopped, and I have not heard anything since.

I clean built my machine (yet again) and it works fine installed on it's own. I tried installing it before SEP, and after it, same effect, just waiting for scanner, then says finished, but has not scanned anything.

I know this topic is old now, but I still have some software that I have paid for that wont work, and there was nothing to mention it will not work if you have endpoint installed.

Never had the problem with any other version of ad-aware, I don't really wont to delete one or the other, as they both see things the other does not so belt and braces and all that.

Hi UK Doctor,

that's ok, we've kept this one open because it's not been resolved so we don't mind new posts.

as a paid user, you are entitled to use the support center, link in signature, try sending them an email and see what their response is???

I have a similar problem with my system. I'm running Vista, SEP (licensed through my employer), and the Plus version of Ad-Aware (bought from an online reseller). All three products worked together flawlessly until I upgraded to Ad-Aware 2008. The 2008 version will not pass "scanning active processes" and can then only be closed with task manager. I've reinstalled 2007, which works, but a full system scan now takes about 9-10 hours (2 physical hard drives, 320 GB each, one of which is partitioned into 2 drives). IIRC, the initial issue I experienced with 2008 was that it couldn't download or couldn't load a definitions file that came out around the time of the initial post in this thread.

This issue has just been reopened and moved from the resolved/inactive forum, so sorry to those of you who have wanted to post.

i did this because I have read that several people have just posted saying they are still having problems, for example: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=22615

Also, I am going to pin this so it doesn't happen again.

Unfortunately this issue is not resolved in the new beta release either: http://beta.lavasoftsupport.com/forums/ind...?showtopic=1433 but will keep updated if it is.

I have at least 4 customers using Endpoint AND running Adaware and have never had this problem. I have endpoint running as "unmanaged" on all the servers and workstations. Adaware was installed "before" installing Endpoint and it's not stopped working. Don't know why the difference but thought I'd chime in here to let you know it WILL work.

Thank you for this!

This is the first report I've seen of it ever working together (although I guess people would not normally post to say everything is ok!)

Could you let us of the version numbers of both programs?

Hmmm maybe Symantec needs to be approached but from reading your post Seemon i don't see any mention of you having Ad-aware installed ( I'm not saying you don't, I'm just going from what i read ), i'll do some searching for a solution for you.

I'm pretty sure that seemon is a spammer (link to AVG coupons). As this topic was 1-1/2 yrs old, I'll kill the link and close this topic.
