New Definitions Update

Recommended Posts

I am a Windows ME user and am trying to manually update the definitions for Ad-Aware SE 1.06r1. Can someone please tell me step-by-step how to update this file? I've also seen the phrase "extract to" used. I'm not sure how to 'extract to' so I also need a step-by-step on that part also.

Please help.

Thanks.

Forget it! None of the definitions files have worked with 98/ME since the middle of May. If you unzip the file into the correct place and fire up AAW SE, it'll throw up an error. Your only option is to grab the final file to work with 98/ME (Gelert's the man to ask if you want it, and I think he's pretty legit ;) ). But it's not a very wise idea as you'd be using a defintions file over two months out of date.

Better to switch to a product from another company that still supports 98/ME such as:-

There are a few more out there, but be careful as many are bogus. The above two were the favoured products amongst those of us still using a dinosaur OS!!

I've been manually updating successfully from the link for SE.

Today it shows a new update (SE1R277) definition file available, but when I download that, the ZIP file actually contains an older (SE1R275) update from July 31st.

That's actually older than my previous (SE1R276) definition file.

What's up? Just slow replacing the file online there at the download link?

(no, I can't change up from SE, it's not my computer, sigh)

EDITED --- the update is now updated, shows 8/6 timestamp.

Thank you.

I came to this forum today, and now I see why Ad-Aware SE does not find any updates!

I had expected Ad-Aware to inform me if I had to install a newer program version?!

I never used the program on a regular basis, anyway. I think last time I tried to run it was around Easter time.

Now I must download the new version. ;)

Yep. They quit doing it for us a few months back.

But I'm very grateful they're still making the files available, for manual install.

Is there a notice board anywhere, or email available, to warn that there's a new update for us stuck in SE yet?

I don't always remember to check every day here.

SE is so much easier to use than the 2008 version. In fact I think 2008 is a step backwards with a non-userfriendly GUI.

I know they want to look pretty but man cant they just stick with what works.? I have had nothing but problems with 2008 and am going to uninstall it.

But SE is two generations out of date and no longer supported, so therefore unable to deal with new/emerging spyware threats.

Better to have an ugly product that can protect you than something pretty that doesn't!

Dear Jaheira:

Many thanks for your reply and suggestions. I really appreciate your assistance. I very much liked your last paragraph, quote: The above two were the favoured products amongst those of us still using a DINOSAUR OS!!! unquote. I have some very close Canadian friends who still :) prefer the "Dinosaur" operating systems! ^_^

Sincerely,

Ack, new definitions file supposedly available for SE now

should be SE1R280

19.08.2008

That's the timestamp on the ZIP file, but the content is the 14.08.2008 prior definition file.

Tried it twice, same both times.

Waiting ....

Ahem. Waiting _patiently_

Still getting another copy of the same old the August 14th update, zipped inside what's supposed to be the August 18th update.

New again today.

SE1R283

26.08.2008

OOPS -- that's what it says, that's what the ZIP file timestamp says.

But the actual def file inside as of now is still the one from 8/22.

Same problem as earlier.

Try again later.

And no, I'm just noting these for a few days, hoping someone at Lavasoft will

--- flag the problem with old updates inside new ZIP files, since that's false assurance for people -- bad!

--- do something to call attention to these files being available, once they are reliably available and identified correctly.

People who don't, for whatever reason, update to the new version need the help, now that automatic updating is broken.

Er, not operative. Discontinued. Whatever.

It's mostly the older folks I know who never noticed SE had quit updating automatically.

I point them here and set up a bookmark and a reminder to look for an update.

Me, I'm adding the notes here for a little while to get used to the habit of checking every day, and to get other people willing to actually check whether the defs file they get is the defs file the package says they're getting.

Bad bug.

Why don't you just point them to:-

http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/

and tell them to take a butchers at the top right hand corner?!

Boohooooooo! SE :D

I do -- with the caution that the link on that page is often -- over-eager? Optimistic? Prematurely updated?

Wrong.

Just using the thread here to note that while I remain interested.

For example right now that link says: SE1R285 04.09.2008

What's inside the ZIP file? SE1R284 02.09.2008

Noted here to perhaps attract the attention of those who aren't reading the timestamps and may be misled into thinking they're updating when they're just copying a mislabeled file.

Lavasoft folks change the label -- probably as soon as the update exists somewhere --- and the change appears on the download button hours (or days) before the actual update file becomes available to those clicking that link.

When we have true AI, the link can actually look inside the ZIP file to check and name itself correctly, eh?
