Ad-Aware 2008 cannot update

Recommended Posts

I am posting this from my father's laptop, because that's where the problem is located. The laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio computer running on XP Home SP2. Norton Internet Security 2006 is installed on this machine. The computer connects to the internet via a wireless network connection. Since updating to Ad-Aware 2008 Free, the program can no longer download definition updates. The following message appears:

No connection to download server

Check Internet connection

The internet connection is fine (signal strength: excellent).

I have, for now, downloaded the latest definition file manually. What is wrong with the program and preventing the "normal" mode of updating? Thank you in advance for your time and answer(s).

I have also attached a HijackThis file:

Hi :D

auto HjT couldn't find any security software/ auto HjT couldn't find a fresh service pack...??

pls download and install CCleaner.

open CCleaner and hit the damaged 'Registry' cube on the left hand side.

run a search for faults - make a screenshot and copy/paste it in your next reply.

Sorry, I did not want to sound rude :-( It's just that I've read/heard rather negative things about registry cleaners - if you don't know how to handle them. And I have no idea about them. I think I'd end up crippling rather than fixing the computer. Also - I managed to solve the problem. I went into the firewall settings of Norton Internet Security and configured it to allow Lavasoft to access the internet connection. One of the entries was marked as "automatic", so I changed the settings to "allow all" (it's a German version of NIS, it said: "Alle zulassen"), so I'm only translating.
