Ad-Aware won't scan

Installed Ad-Aware 2008 (free version) on my laptop but I can't get the program to scan.

 

It stays on "Waiting for scanner" for about 30 seconds then switchs over to scan results, without ever scanning anything.

 

The log files give the following message.

20080912 04-27-51 : Smart scan started.

20080912 04-28-49 : Startup scan disabled.

 

I use Windows XP operation system.

 

Any help would be appreciated.
