Computer HOSED after Ad-aware removed a threat

Recommended Posts

A relative of mine uses Ad-aware to scan his PC periodically. Today the software identified a critical issue that needed fixed (he didn't remember the name of the detected mal-ware.) In any case, when Ad-aware was finished fixing the problem, he rebooted. Now his computer gives him a welcome screen with a logon username choice (this was not an option before) and more importantly, no matter who he logs on as, it logs him off before ever reaching the desktop. So basically, his PC starts, he logs in and it proceeds to log off with his only option available on-screen to shut off his computer.

It does the same thing when we try to boot into safe mode using last known good configuration.

The only thing I can think to try is to figure out if/where this software quarantines files, try to get there with a command line prompt, look to see what windows file (if any) ad-aware hosed and try to fix it manually. This is probably a long shot.

Help! This is extremely frustrating as his whole PC is currently inaccessible.

I had the same problem.

Firstly, you can use this Live CD to rescue and save his files. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...ndows-computer/

Secondly, I just tried this with great success. http://thinkinginpixels.com/quick-fixes/fi...onlog-off-loop/

Most of the members here had no idea how to fix this problem; I've just spent all week looking for these. :) Hope it helps.
