Help...I am infected!

Recommended Posts

Hi! Hope I am posting in the right area. I have read so many posts before posting I started to get confused on which said what but I believe it said if you cannot run HJT to post here anyway....so

I am running a laptop with Windows XP operating system. I run AVG virus protection. However, something managed to get in. It has hijacked my browsers....I mainly use Mozilla Firefox but occasionally use IE6 when something doesnt support Firefox or run correctly with it. The problems started last week when AVG said it detected a trojan. It said it quarantined it however a full system scan then showed several more trojans being quarantined. So I ran and deleted until numerous scans by AVG all showed clear. I then used Symantec online security check to run a virus check and it too showed clear. So I then upgraded to AdAware Anniversary Edition as long as I was going to run that scan and it went through the downloading/updating procedures and ran the scan showing some of the basic detections but also showed 2 infections in the Win32Trojan.Tdds family...those being C:\WINDOWS\system32\UAChywedtohld.dll and autorun.inf. I clicked on the fix button and a box appeared saying AdAware has encountered a problem and shut down. I have done this numerous times with the same result. I also tried to run Spybot which was already downloaded on my system and it will not let me run it. I downloaded Malwarebytes and it did install but will not allow me to run that either nor could I do any Microsoft Windows updates. I also downloaded and installed Trend Micro HJT but cannot run it.

It seems to have infected IE6 more as most times when I open it, it shows the info as if there is no internet connection and there is because everything else is working fine...then after several tries the homepage will come up. Also, it is hijacking me to strange websites when I try to open selected websites especially if they have to do with trying to solve this issue! During this time my computer has started to play audio randomly however from no open window and with no way to stop it....usually connected to having opened a browser window. Assuming that's linked to the other stuff.

Hopefully I am not forgetting anything. The only thing I have really been able to do in full is run the Kaspersky Online Scanner and will attach those results with this post. Any help you can give would be appreciated as I have been trying for a week and this one is beating me!!

Hopefully this helps. My first instinct would be to delete the file that says Trojan but I will not touch anything until I hear something from you the experts. Thanks in advance.

Hi KJ,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.

Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt

[*]Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:

  • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log in your reply.

Hi,

There seems to be p2p file sharing stuff (Limewire at least) installed there. I recommend to uninstall it since big part of infections are obtained from dubious p2p downloads nowadays.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

New dds.txt log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Ok....First ComboFix downloaded but would not run as was the problem originally with detection programs.

I changed it to Combo-Fix which I had read somewhere earlier when researching and that allowed it to run

however I did not see it do a backup of the Windows Registry as pictured in the guide and it would not install

the Recovery System. It said "Failed to download required files...is aborting"

It then continued on with it's scan. Here are the results of that:

ComboFix 09-07-28.01 - Kelly 07/29/2009 1:00.1.2 - NTFSx86

Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.1014.488 [GMT -4:00]

Running from: c:\documents and settings\Kelly\Desktop\Combo-Fix.exe

AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}

FW: Norton Internet Worm Protection *disabled* {990F9400-4CEE-43EA-A83A-D013ADD8EA6E}

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

Hi,

Why would it not have allowed the recovery Console?

It's possible that infection blocked installation. We'll make a new attempt in a moment.

Also, many items that used to be displayed in the icon try next to the clock are not longer there...do they just return as the items are used?

Those are for programs that start on system startup. You may need to reinstall some of those if the icons don't re-appear on next boot. We'll see this later.

Please disable your antivirus protection. When done, open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Hi,

I'll try to check the Kaspersky findings.

Delete these files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\christmas in heaven CD quality.mp3

C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\Desktop\SmileyCentralPFSetup2.2.60.6.ZNfox000.exe

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPMyWebS.dll

C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\plugins\NPMyWebS.dll

When done, go Start > Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c PEV -l %systemdrive%\proquota.exe >Log.txt&Log.txt&del Log.txt

A Notepad file will open. Post the contents of Log.txt in your next reply.

I deleted the files you said and here is the results of the other scan:

Entries: 0 (0)

Directories: 0 Files: 0

Bytes: 0 Blocks: 0

Things seem better but was surprised Kaspersky still found so much on that last scan.

Also, if I could ask a question about the websearch smileys....when I first started searching to add smileys

to my emails that appeared to be the recommended one....everything said stay away from Incredimail....

even Ad-Aware allowed the smileys to stay when the computer was scanned....but as time passed it seems

to have become a bad thing.....I know some time ago Ad-Aware started removing it with the scan. Do they

just attach more junk to the download now making it hazardous? Is there a safe one you know of that I could

use in it's place?

Also, other than having AVG and running Ad-Aware is there anything else I should be doing regularly?

I am just surprised with my preaching to others to make sure you have those two items if nothing else

on your computer than mine got so messed up.

Thanks again for all this help!!

KJ

Hi,

It seems that not a single copy of the file was found. Do you have XP media available so that we can try to get missing file from there?

Things seem better but was surprised Kaspersky still found so much on that last scan.

Most Kaspersky findings were already quarantined items.

Do they just attach more junk to the download now making it hazardous? Is there a safe one you know of that I could

use in it's place?

They track browsing habits and that makes them spyware. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with the smiley packs to be able to recommend any :D

Those AVG and Ad-Aware are ok (as long as both are up-to-date :)). It's possible that infection got in thru unpatched vulnerability. I recommend to upgrade IE to the latest version. IE6 is way too old now. You may do upgrading a bit later.

Hi! I thought I did but upon opening it, it is just a booklet telling about XP...contained no disk : (

I do have a disk set that it said to create when I first got this computer.....it said it would download 4 disks

however stopped at 3 and I never knew how to get it to create again to get the last disk but aby chance

what we are looking for would be on the ones that it did create? Or is it something I can get off my old

laptop that is also XP?

I know when I bought this computer it said they no longer give you an operating system disk so I know

I don't have one from this one.

Hi,

I believe that would do it :D. Please search for proquota.exe file on your other xp system. It should be in c:\windows\system32 folder. If found, copy the file to the following locations on this system we're dealing with:

c:\windows\system32

c:\windows\system32\dllcache

Ok...I found and copied the file to CD....I then copied it in this computer to C:WINDOWS/System32.

I find no folder titled C:WINDOWS\System32\dllcache to copy it to. Do you want me to make a new

folder titled that and save it there?

Please do create the folder. It should usually exist.

Ok....I'm confused. When I went into WINDOWS/System32 and tried to create a dllcache folder it says one

already exists name the new folder something else. So thinking maybe I missed it I did a search of all files

and folders for c:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache and it says no matches found. So then I went into My Computer,

Local Disk C, WINDOWS, System 32 unhid all files and finding no file or folder titled dllcache I tried to create it and

again it told me it already exists. So what do I do now?

Also, I have noticed a lot of files starting with $...have they always been there and I didn't notice that or are

those problems?

My continued thanks!

Hi,

Please place proquota.exe file to your desktop and try following batch to copy the file to right folder.

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.

xcopy "%userprofile%\desktop\proquota.exe" c:\windows\system32\dllcache

del %0

Double-click on fixes.bat file to execute it.

When done, try to run command in post #8. Then post contents of fresh Log.txt file that should appear after command has been run.

Also, I have noticed a lot of files starting with $...have they always been there and I didn't notice that or are

those problems?

Those are backups related to your Windows updates. No need to worry about them :)

When I double clicked it, it opened a box titled C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe

Inside that box said C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\Desktop>xcopy "C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\desktop\proquota.exe"

c:\windows/system32\dllcache

Overwrite C:\windows\system32\dllcache\proquota.exe (Yes/No/All)?

Thought I better check with you before I selected just to be sure......

So, the file exists after all. Select "no" to the question. Please copy-paste following bolded command in the runbox now:

cmd /c PEV -l %systemdrive%\proquota.exe >Log.txt&Log.txt&del Log.txt

Then post back contents of the Log.txt.

Great, you may remove the copy on your desktop now :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

Check Turn off System Restore.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Click the System Restore tab.

UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.

  5. Under the
    Hidden files
    folder, select
    Show hidden files and folders.

  6. Check
    Hide protected operating system files.

  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combo-Fix /u in the runbox and click OK

You may delete DDS too.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.

Click once on the Security tab

Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.

Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here

If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:

    1. Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    2. Click run
    3. In the dialog box, type services.msc
    4. hit enter, then locate dns client
    5. Highlight it, then double-click it.
    6. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    7. Click ok

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.

If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free or Comodo Firewall Pro (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.

Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,

Blade :)

So far things seem to be running good :)

I did the System Restore off...reboot....back on.

Re-hid all files

When I put Combo-Fix \u in the run box it says it cannot be found but the icon is still on my desktop.

I will work on the Microsoft updates. I update AVG and Ad-Aware religiously but guess I have never trusted

Microsoft so don't do those as frequently as I should. I have not upgraded to SP3 yet...what is your feeling on

that? I always tend to wait long enough for others to get the bugs out...do you recommend doing everything

from Microsoft as soon as it is available?

I see now where my first error came in....when upgrades to AVG started saying they couldn't be done...ck internet

connection etc. I got frustrated and uninstalled it and reinstalled it thinking it was a problem with the free version

which of course has no tech support to ask...never once thought of a virus/malware having gotten in and causing

the problem. If there is a next time you can be assured it will cross my mind. I also slacked on full system scans

thinking it should be catching everything as it comes in so why slow the computer down for hours with the full scan.

Bad thinking!

I will work on doing all the Windows upgrades.

Can you advise on the Combo-fix deletion?

Thanks!

Kelly

Hi,

The command has to be Combo-Fix /u and not Combo-Fix \u. You may copy-paste the correct one in the runbox :)

That was a mis-type on my part in the response...I had cut and pasted it before and did it again and it says

Windows cannot find it.

I did a file search and it shows this:

Combo-Fix in C:|Documents and Settings\Kelly\Desktop

Combo-fix log 1 in My Computer (has IE logo next to it)

Will it get the same results if I try to delete each of those from that search result area?

Hi,

No, that won't give same results.

Let's try removing with a batch file.

Open notepad and then copy and paste the bolded lines below into it. Go to File > save as and name the file fixes.bat, change the Save as type to all files and save it to your desktop.

@echo off

c:

cd\Documents and Settings\Kelly\Desktop

Combo-Fix /u

del %0

Double-click on fixes.bat file to execute it.

That said ComboFix uninstalled

Do you recommend upgrading to Microsoft Windows SP3 at this point also?

Also, I noticed a new issue today....I use Outlook Express for email and incoming ads this

morning all open a blank page as if HTML is not working....if they have a link in the email that

says Having trouble viewing click here it will then display but all don't have it so I can't see

what the email said. Would anything we have done changed something there? I have never

had any problem before.
