Ad Aware will not connect to service ( another one )

3 posts in this topic

Hi,

I am also having a "Ad Aware will not connect to service" issue. I have done the uninstall ( using Revo ) and re-install as suggested in another thread, no improvement. This started with a set of Microsoft updates a couple of days ago, although there may be a malware issue as well. I have run MalwareBytes and Spybot, and they are currently reporting clean. I also ran MS MSRT ( Malicious Software Removal Tool ) and that found nothing.

When I try to run Ad Aware ( 8.1 ), I get the message "Ad Aware will not connect to service".

When I go to services, the Lavasoft Ad Aware service is there, but not started. It will not start. It was set to automatic.

When I try to go to the event logs to check for any clue as to why the no connect, the log viewer runs, but none of the logs will display.

Back in services I noticed that the event log is also not started, and is unable to be started.

I have checked a whole bunch of things manualy trying to figure out why the event logging is not starting as i think that that is why Ad Aware is not starting.

I tried a shareware log viewer to rule out the eventvwr.msc, that also does not display the event logs.

Task Manager is not showing network activity when it should not be. Likewise, there does not seem to be any unusual disk activity.

At least two other packages are also mis-behaving. Diskeeper and the software to handle the intel wireless network card.

This PC is a Dell d520 laptop, Windows XP, sp3, all ms patches current.

I am leaning towards either an issue with a new patch, or some malware issue that is staying low profile and is not yet being picked up by the scanners. However, I can't find anything to support either theory.

Any suggestions as to the next step would be much appriciated.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Ok well let's first see if we can rule out malware. Please follow the instructions in my signature and post a HJT log in the HJT forums for analysis outlining why you think you might be infected.
