Ad-aware 8.1 aborts after a few seconds of scanning

Recommended Posts

Ad-aware 8.1 Free aborts after a few seconds of Fullscan, after 11 seconds in most recent case. Event log shows Event ID 7031: "The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 5 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: No action. "

I installed it last night, and am yet to get it to do a scan. I am running Win2K SP4 with Rollup 1, also Kaspersky Anti-virus, Spybot S&D and TeaTimer.

Help please.

Hi chris,

Lavasoft's Q&A team are currently looking into this, we've had a few reports of this nature. What would be really helpful is if you could update your other security software and run scans with those - to see if they detect any threats.

Also, would it be possible to look in your event logs, find this error and then post the details?

Cheers,

Casey

I just tried to run a Smart Scan. The event is:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Date: 2009-11-13
Time: 23:34:30
User: N/A
Computer: JOSIE
Description:
The Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 5000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

According to Kaspersky Anti-virus and Spybot S&D my system is clean. KAV is updated automatically, i.e. at least daily. Sybot S&D checks for updates daily and downloads them whenever available.

Your news is slightly comforting: at least you are not saying that my computer is definitely virused!

It is now a month since I reported that Ad-Adaware aborts after scanning for 10 seconds. I realize that this may be a hard bug to find. Is there anything I should be doing on my end? Revert to previous version? If so, where can I find it?

Hi,

Yes, unfortunately, we've not heard anything more from Lavasoft. I might give that topic a bump and see where they're at.

You could try reverting to the Anniversary Edition if that works ok for you? You can download it safely from here: http://filehippo.com/download_ad-aware/5878/ just make sure you only update definitions and not software.

Casey

P.S. If required would you be willing to have a Lavasoft employee remote access to try and debug the program?

I removed A-A 8.1 via Add/Remove Programs. BTW In a screen showing "Uninstalling Ad-aware", the Status was "Installing Ad-aware!

Uninstall completed OK.

I downloaded Anniversary Edition from the link you gave. Filehippo said the version was 8.0.7.0, as did File | Properties.

I installed AE via Start | Run. Installation completed; I accepted to reboot. Upgrade Manager showed. It downloaded definitions and some dlls and exes. Dialog box said "Connection error. check your settings".

I got dialog box "AAwService.exe - Application failed to initialize becaus Windows is shutting down". The PC rebooted AOK. AE showed "Loading" for at leasta minute. Smart Scan aborted after 8 secs. Event log shows

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Date: 2009-12-21
Time: 15:41:41

What next?

I am willing to have a Lavasoft employee access my computer remotely, but wish to be advised of any changes before they are made. How can I be sure that it is a Lavasoft employee who is accessing my computer?

After installation, don't reboot. First go into advanced mode settings and turn off auto-updates. This is to prevent Ad-Aware from trying to update to version 8.0.8. You can manually download definitions only:

I'm not sure when you updated, but over the weekend there was a problem with the update server and everyone was getting the connection error. Lavasoft fixed it Monday. But remember, clicking "update" does both software and definitions. If you update to 8.0.8, you'll get nag screens to update to the new 2010 8.1:
