I still can't update. Even manually.

Recommended Posts

I have tried everything listed on the website and on the forum, every instruction and suggested workaround, but I cannot get the Update Manager to work. Everything I try just gets me this:

Connection error, check your settings. (Errorcode: -1)

I've even tried manually downloading the definition file from the Malware Blog, but that doesn't work, because the file, core.zip, is empty. It is zero bytes in length and contains no files.

I don't know why it is taking such Herculean effort just to update Ad-Aware. Please help me.

I am using the free edition of version 8.2.0. Additionally, whenever I start the program, I am encouraged to update to the latest version, a prompt which leads me to download.com. Edited by plasquatch

I can't update either.

I'm using XP Pro on a laptop that is networked with two other computers that are running XP Home. I successfully updated Adaware (the free version) yesterday on one of the desktops, and have been trying to do so for some time on the laptop. Both computers had been running the previous version of Adaware.

I get to the point where the Installer says "The program is being configured...", "Status: Computing space requirements", then I get an error message that says "Could not access network location :." Then, after I cancel that message, I get a warning that says "Unable to uninstall old version.....Please uninstall it yourself using Control Panel...Fatal error during installation".

I have tried uninstalling through the Control Panel, but this fails. I have deleted every reference I can find to Lavasoft and Adaware using both Windows Explorer and Regedit. I have run a registry cleaner. I have tried reinstalling the previous version of Adaware (I still have the installer for this), I have downloaded again the new version and tried that. No luck. There is 47GB of free space on the laptop.

Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks

Richard

Edit. OK, after much fiddling around, I've finally got Version 8.1.4 back onto the laptop. I'm going to leave V8.2 alone for a while :-) I've still not got any idea why V8.2 should have failed to install, and then prove to be so extremely difficult to remove. Edited by knight44

That's odd - the Malware Blog should redirect to http://download.lavasoft.com/public/core.zip
I've had problems in the past with the definition file not being updated, but never got an empty file. It's been working for me the last couple months without fail.

Can you try following the prompt? User proserv did, and the update worked:

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?s...st&p=117301

Otherwise, like knight44, I'd revert back to version 8.1 until they work out more bugs. You can download 8.1 installer here:

http://download.lavasoft.com/public/81/Ad-...nstallation.exe

Use Revo Free Uninstaller (revouninstaller.com) on the highest setting and after uninstall, let it remove all remnants.
Then after 8.1 installs, turn off auto-updates so it doesn't update to 8.2.

Also, if you want to update definitions only, without the software updates, here are the instructions:

http://www.lavasoft.com/mylavasoft/support...hat-should-i-do

Download the core.zip file, unzip, and place the core.aawdef file into the defs folder. Then reboot or exit/restart Ad-Aware to reload the new defs. The new definition number should appear on the main screen, even if the date of the last update is not correct (the date corresponds to the last Web Update of both software and defs).
