Can't install Ad-Aware due to infection: Need to remove infection first manually?

24 posts in this topic

I'm trying to install Ad-Aware, but my computer wouldn't let me apparently due to virus infection. The Lavasoft Support personnel suggested I remove the infection manually first and said I can learn how to do it here.

Here's the description of the problem:
I put in the CD.
I go to "My Computer" and click on "Autoplay" to run the CD since the CD doesn't run automatically.
The CD player begins to run, but soon "Windows Security Alert" balloon pops up from the bottom bar, saying, "Application cannot be executed. The file ad-awareinstaller.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" If I kill the balloon, nothing happens. The installation process doesn't go beyond this point.
If I answer "Yes," it takes me to Antispyware Soft website, where you can buy their products (which I don't).

The Lavasoft Support person suggested an online installer, but the same alert message popped up when I tried to run it.

Soo after I turn on the computer, and while I'm not doing anything, multiple "Security Warning" messages begin to pop up in the middle of the screen. For instance, here is one: "Application cannot be executed. The file realplay.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" In other words, it's the same message as "Windows Security Alert" balloon that comes up from the bottom bar. If I kill the "Warning" message, another one with a different file name pops up soon (I've seen control.exe, realupgrade.exe, rundl32.exe, etc. so far).

After a while, web browser is automatically activated, and some adult sites are displayed.

I have an expired antivirus program on the computer (Symantec). It has displayed "Virus Attack Alert" messages several times. One example of the message, if it helps, is:
Attack From: 197.6.182.122, port 44916
Attacked Port: 5535
Threat: BankerFox.A
(In another message, the Threat was identified as win32/Nuqel.E)

Hope this helps. Do I really have to remove the infection manually in order to install Ad-Aware? If I do, how do I remove it manually?

Hi,

Download OTL to your desktop and rename it to iEXpLore.exe.

Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.

Copy-paste following contents into custom scan -area:
netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
CREATERESTOREPOINT
%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

I downloaded OTL, but it looks like I can't open it!

I use Firefox, so the otl file shows up in a pop-up window called "Downloads." When I double-click on the OTL icon, or right-click to choose "open," to open it, I get the same "Security Warning" pop-up message, "Application cannot be executed. The file otl.exe is infected."

How do I get beyond this point?

Thanks.

My bad! I was able to run OTL after all.

One problem. After the scan, when I double-click to open the notepads, I get the message, "Application cannot be executed. The file notepad.exe is infected" and I can't open it. Right-clicking & "open" leads to the same result. So, instead of copying the contents, I decided to attach those two notepads to my post. I hope this is OK.

Thanks.

Hi,

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

DDS.txt

Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post their contents back to your topic.
Thanks for the quick response, as always! Here are DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs. Sorry, I can't zip up Attach.txt. Hope this works.

Copy-pasting the attach.txt contents is ok :D

Above listed ones are P2P file sharing programs. P2P downloads are nowadays one of those things that most likely bring infection into the system. My recommendation is to uninstall these (and other if present) P2P file sharing programs.

Is your Symantec Antivirus license valid?

That was a quick response! Here is my report:

1) I wasn't sure how I should remove Vuze. Should I use the Add/Remove function on the Control Panel?

2) My Symantec Antivirus license is old, must be about 4-years old. I don't think it's valid.

3) I couldn't uninstall the old Adobe Reader. When I clicked on the "Remove" button in the Control Panel's Add/Remove section, an alert window called "Adobe Reader 7.1.0" popped up with the following message: "Error 1327.Invalid Drive: F:\" I couldn't install the new Adobe Reader, either. When I attempted, I got another alert window "Adobe Reader 9.3 Installer Information" with the exactly same message: "Error 1327.Invalid Drive: F:\"

4) Please see the new ComboFix log below (I thought of attaching the file, but I can't find file attachment option on the board: Why is that??).

5) ESET report also pasted below.

6) New DDS log also pasted below.

Thanks. Sorry this post is going to be very long...

Hi again,

1) Yes, uninstall via Add/remove programs.
2) Ok, it's better to replace it with other solution. I'll give you some list when we've finished.
4) Does this happen with both Internet Explorer and Firefox? If only with Firefox then clean its cache.

Download & extract this file to it's own folder - Registry Search

Launch Registry Search
In the search box, enter (on separate lines)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Under Search, make sure only the Value box is checked in the first row of checkboxes. All other checkboxes should be checked.

Click Ok.
Notepad will open with some text in it (the file will also be saved in the program's folder as well).
Post this text in your next reply.

Thanks much for the prompt reply and instructions, even on a weekend!

I was able to install Adobe Reader 9.3 using IE. Didn't understand why it worked with IE, but I was happy. I'll learn to clean the cache of Firefox. I couldn't install Adobe Reader 9.3.2 Update, though, even with IE. The same "Error 1327.Invalid Drive: F:\" message popped up.

Here are Registry Search logs. There are two logs simply because the Registry Search window accepted only up to 4 strings at a time.

By the way (since I forgot to mention this yesterday), adult websites and the Antispyware Soft website have stopped popping up, and the computer seems to be running normally.

Hi,

Let's run a new check with Registry Search. Have all boxes checked and put F:\ as search string. Probably better to attach the result file if it's long (if file attaching works now with IE or Firefox).

I ran Registry Search again, with only "F:\" as search string. I left all the boxes checked this time. The log turned out to be fairly short, so here it is!

Hi,

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on the Desktop.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1598330454-1332260136-4256513546-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]
"My Pictures"="%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures"
It should look like this ->

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

Reboot and see if the error still appears.

Created fix.reg on Desktop, added the info to the registry (actually twice, by mistake. hope it doesn't hurt), and rebooted the computer. I'm afraid I'm clueless as to what error you may be referring to... In case you meant the last Registry Search, here is the new log:

Hi,

Seems that didn't work out too well. We have to change registry settings manually.

Click start->run->type cmd.exe and press enter. Copy-paste the following command in command prompt window:
SWReg EXPORT "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1598330454-1332260136-4256513546-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" c:\re180510.reg
1. Click start->run->type regedit and press enter.
2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1598330454-1332260136-4256513546-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders branch. There you should see My Pictures value.
3. Double click it and copy paste this into Value data -field: %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures
4. Click ok and close registry editor. See if you're able to install Adobe Reader update.
start notepad

Navigated to
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1598330454-1332260136-4256513546-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
and changed the value data to => %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures
(By the way, its "Type" remained REG_SZ, while all other entries on the same column were REG_EXPAND_SZ. Any significance?)
Closed Registry Editor, and attempted to install the Adobe Reader Update by double-clicking the icon on Desktop.
This time, I got "Error 1606.Could not access network location %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures\"

While doing all this, I remembered that sometime ago I moved the Windows' original "My Pictures" folder to an external drive and renamed it "Photos". Thinking this may have been a problem, I just moved it back to "My Documents." But in the process of renaming it back to "My Pictures," I did something wrong: now the file name appears "%s's Pictures" and it would not let me rename it (both right-clicking and File drop-down menu don't give "rename" option). I still get "Error 1606" when I try to install Adobe Reader Update.

And I wasn't sure what I needed to do with the CODE: SWReg EXPORT "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1598330454-1332260136-4256513546-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" c:\re180510.reg

Hi,
And I wasn't sure what I needed to do with the CODE: SWReg EXPORT "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1598330454-1332260136-4256513546-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" c:\re180510.reg
Did you run it as instructed? That should had created backup export of the registry key (c:\re180510.reg file).

Go to registry editor (via regedit) again. Navigate to that very same branch and right click My Pictures. Select delete. Then right click on empty area below values there and select new->expandable string value. Name it as My Pictures and edit its value to %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures

I just ran SWReg EXPORT correctly, and re180510.reg has been created (I searched for it, and it turned up).
Then I edited the registry as instructed.
After all this, Adobe Reader Update was successfully installed. Thanks much!
What now?
P.S. The mysterious "%s's Pictures" has gone back to the normal file name "My Pictures" in "My Documents"

Good. Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

Replace outdated Symantec Antivirus.

Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir
Avast! and
AVG Free Antivirus

Good commercial ones are from:
Kaspersky and
ESET

For firewall I recommend either Online Armor Free or Comodo Firewall Pro (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo SafeSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!).

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN

Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK
Please download OTC and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.

Click the CleanUp! button.

Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.

If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.

The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:

Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.

In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.

We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.

However, it can slow down certain computers.

This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:

Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)

Click run

In the dialog box, type services.msc

hit enter, then locate dns client

Highlight it, then double-click it.

On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.

Click ok

Run Secunia vulnerability check here and fix its findings.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade :P

I had some connection problem yesterday, but everything is fine now.
I followed all the instructions (I haven't made up my mind about HOSTS file yet, though), and everything seems good. Thanks so much for the detailed instructions and info.

One question. What do you think of leaving the following IE security option "Disabled"?
* Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
While reading related webpages, I noticed someone recommending "disable" for enhanced security.

I'll let you know if I think of more questions! Thanks.

Hi,

Having that setting disabled is more secure. Some sites may require the functionality though.
