Total Security Shredder

Recommended Posts

There's no info in the manual on this fuction, but it's listed as an included item. It posted an icon on my desktop, but appears to do nothing. Right-clicking brings up a dialog asking how many passes I want - passes of what? Does this funtion work? How?

For Total Security, you should contact Lavasoft Support via the link in my signature. The info on their pages may or may not be updated from when it was a stand-alone product:

I contacted Support, and they asked for a screen picture of the icon and the right-click dialog box, which I sent to them. I looked at the PDF you listed for the shredder, and I don't get any control boxes like that at all. I suspect that when I downloaded the program, it was not complete. Let's see what support tells me. Thanks for the PDF info.

In addition - when I placed my order, I also ordered the backup CD (you know - belt AND suspenders). The CD offers installation of the Shredder along with all the other programs, but I don't know how to install just that without endangering the other modules already installed. Or if that's just as crippled as the downloaded version is. The CD also includes a Trial Copy of the File Shredder. Why would they do that if it was already included in the basic program? Sounds like growing pains, as Total Security is the first time their stand-alone products have been integrated into an all-in-one security package. Maybe the trial shredder happened to be in the folder they burned to CD, or they're hoping users will share it with friends?

I received a reply from Tech Support, and they missed the message in my message altogether. I had told them that the program didn't work (left-click did nothing), but that the icon on the desktop had an unusual right-click property, and they essentially told me what that property box meant. I already knew that - but the underlying program was completely missing. So today I installed (from my CD) the Trial Version, and it's only good for thirty days, but it has the full progrm interface (and a different desktop icon). Now, if I could just find where my registration code for my Total Security was hidden, I might be able to activate the Trial Version with it. I've asked Tech Support, but I suspect that they won't understand what's going on.

After this, I got another reply - the File Shredder included in the Total Security package is a severly-limited (read "crippled") version of the File Shredder that they sell separately. However, that module in the download version of Total Security was broken. I installed that module from my CD, and it works - within it's restricted parameters. It will shred a file only when you "drag" it to the desktop icon - it won't shred any free space or skip space. There is no option for the type of shredding, only the number of passes. And for that, you have to khow where to look - it's hidden. There is absolutely no documentation about this module at all - anywhere. I've got a three-year license on a module that is useless.

Thanks for the info - I was under the impression that Total Security was going to replace their selling of individual products, but it looks like it's still better to have a dedicated application for something like shredding. They do need documentation in the Total Security manual considering there's nothing there now except "choose to install" the module.

Maybe if you ask they'll let you convert your license from Total Security to the stand-alone Shredder?

I suspect that this thread may soon be removed, due to my increasing dissatisfaction with the responses from the support staff. Their latest e-mail challenged me to list the web pages that said the file shredder was the same, so I sent them the web page addresses, where the names of two modules of Total Security have the same exact name as free-standing programs. They also told me that they had earlier instructed me on how to use the included File Shredder, completely missing my point about how there is no documentation whatever on this module, and how to use it. Not in the Help files, not in the instruction manual, and not on any of their web pages. The operation is not intuitive, and I told them so.
