Getting rid of the Safe browsing page

18 posts in this topic

How do I turn off the Safe Browsing page? Safe Browsing is turned off in Ad-Aware. I've restarted Ad-Aware, Restarted the computer, shut down Ad-Aware. No matter what, whenever I type a word into the Firefox address bar like Wikipedia, or Google, or Lavasoft, and press enter it gives me this page. It's really not cool.

Hi philnolan3d,

I wonder why that function is not working as it should, that is you should only get to that page when you enter a web address that doesn't exist.
Please, see if you have Ad-Aware Browsing Protection installed (Control Panel - "Programs and features" or "Add and remove programs"), then try to uninstall it.
You can also check if any add-ons (extensions) related to Ad-Aware are installed in Firefox (menu Tools - Add-ons).

I am having the exact same issue. After updating to the newest version of Ad-Aware yesterday, my address bar in Firefox stopped working the way it had previously. Firefox has a feature to use the address bar as a search box as well, and I use that all the time. So I don't have to type in a valid website, I can just type a word to search, and it comes up with Google search results. That no longer works.

I have Safe Browsing turned off, and it still hijacks my browser. I even turned off Ad-Aware completely, and it still hijacks my firefox address bar.

This is not good. Why would I want to continue using an Anti-virus program when it is doing things that I don't want it to do, and it won't let me turn it off!? Even without the program running it is doing things. From a user standpoint, that is frustrating.

Your program has actually started fitting parts of the definition of Malware! Malware is software designed to disrupt computer operation... it is a general term to mean a variety of forms of intrusive, or annoying software or code. Obviously it's not hostile, which is a big part of malware, but still. Come on!

I have trusted Ad-Aware for years, but now I'm just not sure anymore.

The first thing I did was check add-ons in Firefox, and nothing new was there.

Thankfully, CeciliaB has suggested the correct solution. I had to go into Windows Control Panel, and uninstall Ad-Aware Browsing Protection.

It looks like this severly needs ot be fixed!

Hi jlyon1515,

Thank you for the information! :)
I'm glad that my suggestion solved your problem.

I will show your post for my contact person at Lavasoft. To be able to reproduce the problem I think Lavasoft wants some more information.
Do you have Firefox version 12 (the latest)?
Which Windows version do you have, including 32 or 64 bits?

"Safe browsing" is a feature that works in another way to protect the computer.

Hi again,

Using Firefox address field for searching is a known problem that probably will be corrected in Ad-Aware 10.2.

I actually created an account for the sole purpose of replying to this thread. This issue needs to be addressed. It needs a higher priority than "probably will be corrected." I've been using Ad Aware for years, but if I get an update to 10.2 and it does not fix this problem. I won't be a user any longer. There are many many programs and utilities that will install a browser toolbar during installation, but they give you the option to not install it, if you don't want those features. I never saw anything regarding this while I was installing the newest Ad Aware. Sure, maybe it was an unintended consequence, which I can forgive. What I can't forgive is if it is not corrected.

Hi kingw,

I don't know what Lavasoft has planned to do in each of the up-coming releases, so I don't know in which release the fix for being able to use Firefox' address field as a search field will be available.

Regarding the Ad-Aware Security toolbar (that has not been discussed before in this topic), that is an option during the installation of Ad-Aware 10.x, see page 9 in the manual.

I am having the same issue. When I go to some of my regular websites (including the message board for my part-time job!), I get the AdAware Safe Browsing screen. I completely UNINSTALLED every Lavasoft program from my computer, disabled any Lavasoft Firefox plug-ins/add-ons, restarted... and still get the screen when I go to Facebook, my company website, and other pages. How can Adware's safe browsing still be blocking my internet browser when I removed it from my computer? I am running Firefox 13.0.

Hi tizar,

Do you have the same problem in Internet Explorer?

Please, save DDS to your desktop: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr

Double-click on the DDS tool to run it.

When finished, DDS will open two (2) logs:
1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt

Save them to your desktop and paste their content into your answer. Then I can read them and see what is still running or what Firefox setting that needs to be changed.

Exactly the same problem. I tried deleting everything as well. I have used Ad Aware since maybe 2002 and will NEVER use it again unless this garbage is fixed. I need my default back to Google. I already tried editing the Keyword URL in about:config in Firefox and even that didn't work.

Hi brfatal,

Are you sure that you have uninstalled "Ad-Aware Browsing Protection" too?
If not, please do so.
If yes, please remove the folder C:\ProgramData\Ad-Aware Browsing Protection.

It is still possible to use Ad-Aware 9.6 and it can be downloaded from FileHippo.

Something else.

The the above lines indicates that you have old versions of Java installed, version 6 update 16 and 22. They have known vulnerabilities and that makes it easy to infect the computer from a web page. Please, uninstall them. If you need Java, you can install the latest version from http://www.java.com/

I have now a confirmation from Lavasoft that uninstalling "Ad-Aware Browsing Protection" should stop www.pagenotfound.co from coming up in the web browsers. Please, note that it will still be possible to set "Safe Browsing" on Ad-Aware main screen to On but it will be off anyway.

Version 10.2 will fix several issues with "Browsing Protection".

Hey

I have the same issues I DONT WANT ANYTHING SECURE SEARCH FROM ANY COMPANY ! They are always very annoying and even though most of the times powered by Google are they of very low quality....

I have like some of the other as well created an account with the sole purpose of answering and prodiving feedback on this issue and function/product....

It should be able to disable secure and still get "some" protection with some of the other tools for internet security ? :)

Thank you very much for making a good freeware/free license and program for very good program :)

( I have used it for several years and is besides the post a very satisfied client :) )

Best Regards

Hi HelloThere,

Have you still something installed that you don't want, and want help to get rid of it, or did you only express your opinion?
In the latter case, I think it is best if I move your post to the topic with suggestions for future versions, which is monitored by Lavasoft staff.

I also created an account specifically to address this. I just got a new computer, and installed ad-aware to help protect it from people trying to hijack functions like the "page does not exist" page on my browsers. Chrome does a google search. I like it that way.

I'm used to useful apps trying to install yahoo search bars and stuff, and I ALWAYS dutifully click "Dont install". I saw that adaware had some newfangled browser protection options and unclicked the install checkboxes.

THEY INSTALLED ANYWAYS.

Edit:

"Add/remove programs" put everything back to normal. easy fix. but seriously?

Hi rcko,

Do you still have a question or are you satisfied with that you could uninstall Ad-Aware Browsing Protection?

I think that the only things you can unclick under the installation is the toolbar and the start page. Was the toolbar installed or the start page changed?

This is crap! Adaware used to be such a great product, now it's exactly what we're trying to get rid of. Once I get rid of the safe search thing I will never use the product again. The problem I have is that no matter what programs I delete the safe browser is still pushing its way into chrome.

Seems like everyone is having this problem and there doesn't seem to be a easy solution. Bye Bye lavasoft, hope you bankrupt.
