Cannot uninstall Ad-Aware AE or upgrade to 10 on XP

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have seen similar issues but not the same. In my case I did not wish to contiune using Ad-Aware AE. I was ugrading my Norton 360 edition to version 6.0 and it said there was a conflict with Ad-Aware AE so I needed to uninstall it. I fallowed the normal process of start, programs, lavasoft adaware uninstall but when I try I am getting an error saying I am missing a mia.lib. I cannot install my new software until yours is uninstalled and I cannot even use your AE version as it is missing a file. I tried upgrading to Ad-Aware 10 hoping it would add the missing file and then allow me to uninstall but the 10 version will not fully install. I run the installer, it says I need to reboot, I complete that but It does not replace the old software, only creates a new folder for ad-aware antivirus with a definitions folder and nothing else. No option to uninstall.

I have gone to the add remove programs option in windows and it will not allow me to uninstall. I also tried running add remove pro and that could not delete it. Please help me get rid of this software.

I am running windows XP home edition SP3

Thanks!

Hi nojolt4u,

Ad-Aware 10 installation program doesn't contain an uninstallation of Ad-Aware AE since it is too old (has not been supported for at least a year now). The code is rewritten in Ad-Aware 10 so there are no files in version 10 that AE can use.

Maybe one of these topics can help you uninstall AE:

Hello nojolt4u. If you haven't solved the problem yet, what about doing a Search. Click Start, Search, type in Lavasoft then anything to do with Lavasoft should show. Then delete all the references. Also, go to Windows Explorer using the Windows key and E, open Local Disc then Programme files and find Lavasoft in the list, then right click and click delete. I have done this before with other stubborn programmes without problems. However, I would suggest doing a Restore point first in case anything goes wrong.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to uninstall a program, and specially not a program with drivers as security programs, by only deleting files and references in the registry.

Even if I wanted to, I cannot delete the folder. I tried that as a last resort and that's when I received the error about missing a mia.lib. It tells me to upgrade to Ad-Aware 10 to resolve the issue. But then I do and to your point, they are different programs so one does not fix the other.

Sorry, I don't think I understand you.

You should find the Ad-Aware folder that contains for example the Ad-AwareAE.res file. It is probably inside one of the folders located in C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\ since you have XP.

This suggest using Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Ad-Aware.

what I am saying is that neither suggestion you made works. There is no file under program data that has an ad-awareAE.res file and the revo uninstaller installed for free but now wants me to purchase software to uninstall your freeware. That makes no sense!

Are you sure that you downloaded the free version of Revo Uninstaller and not the Pro version?
It can be a bit difficult to find on their website, since they have reorganised it. You can try to download from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Revo-Uninstaller.shtml instead.

Maybe you only have some parts of Ad-Aware AE since you don't have any Ad-Aware folder in C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\. We can check what Ad-Aware processes and drivers that are installed if you want.

that link that you sent gives me an installer that wants to add browser add-ins, optimizers, and some shop and win QwikLinx software. I was able to find a better link, ran the Revo and will test it today.

Are you sure that you clicked the right links and not clicked on an advertisement?
On linked page a blue download button with an arrow, and then "Softpedia Mirror (US)".
When I do it, I'll end up with this download link: http://download1uk.softpedia.com/dl/2a1ce5128c59e340f2ec7d3787dffcb8/50218d32/100074235/software/tweak/revosetup.exe
I uploaded the file to VirusTotal and no program finds it harmful: https://www.virustotal.com/file/9db1d558be2f207e6ecc0f0210cf9cef0e109ead048790239b4c758ae33bab28/analysis/

yes, it tried to force additional content with the Revo. But, I was able to install from a different location, and uninstall all Ad-Aware content. The issue appears to be resolved at this point. Thanks for your help

Hello,

When I go to install Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 on my Win XP machine, it tries to unistall Ad-Aware but cannot. I tried unistalling Ad-Aware using Windows and Revo Uninstaller but neither detects Ad-Aware on my machine. I have done a search for Ad-Aware and deleted all files that I can find without success. Only Bitdefender detects Ad-Aware on my machine. Can any one please provide assistance? Thank you.

Hi dm1985,

Which version of Ad-Aware do/did you have? This topic is about Ad-Aware AE.

Have you tried all the suggestions in this topic?

If you are sure, that there are no Ad-Aware drivers, that still are installed, you might try:

Start - Run

Enter:

wbemtest

Click on OK

When the program has started, do as in these five pictures:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Delete_AV_From_WMI.gif

That means:

Connect

root\SecurityCenter

Query

SELECT * FROM AntivirusProduct

Apply

Select the number for Ad-Aware (should be the only one).

Delete

Restart the computer.
