Manual update of definitions

Question

New information:

The official solution from Lavasoft is to uninstall Ad-Aware, and select to delete everything during the uninstallation, restart the computer and then install Ad-Aware again.

Link to installation program: http://ow.ly/sQKKE

An official apology from Lavasoft: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?/topic/33939-message-from-richard-martineau-product-owner-and-coordinator-at-lavasoft/

Old information:

Please, note that the current update issue (second half of May) might be solved by following the instructions in the http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?/topic/33921-you-can-not-download-definition-files/page-2?p=145367#entry145367 post.

The attached files contain the definitions from 23rd of May.

If you have Windows XP or other 32 bits Windows, please download 32 bits Plugins0523.zip.
If you have 64 bits Windows, please download 64 bits Plugins0523.zip.
Note that the files are big and will take long time to download if your internet connection is slow.

Save the zip file on the desktop or in another folder where you can find it.
Right-click the zip file and select Extract all.

A folder called 32 bits Plugins0523 or 64 bits Plugins0523 will be created and opened.
Please, select all files and copy them.

Find the folder C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware Antivirus\Antimalware Engine\2.6.0.0\Plugins, using Windows Explorer or similar program.
If your Windows is in another language than English the Program Files folder probably is called something else.

Right-click the Plugins folder and select Paste.
When Windows asks what to do with the files, since they already exist in the folder, please select to replace the files.

When done, please restart the computer.

If still unsuccessful, please see the instruction by Calon: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?/topic/33926-manual-update-of-definitions/page-2#entry145422

Hi piranha69,

Please, respect that one of the rules for the forum is that English shall be used.

I ran your post through an automatic translator, and according to the result you have a paid version of Ad-Aware. I suggest that you contact Lavasoft support instead: http://lavasoft.com/mylavasoft/support/supportcenter/contact_support

I followed all the steps-still won't allow my definition files to download

Hi robertd1249,

Have you followed both the instructions in the linked post and the instructions here?

Are you sure that you deleted all files that it was possible to delete (all but a few)?

Question for Lavasoft-

The instructions say "Select 'Replace' since the files already exist in the folder."

But it was my understanding that this manual update is to be attempted only if the throwing out of plug-ins from the 2.6.0.0 folder fails. Mine failed, and now most of the files are no longer in the 2.6.0.0 folder (only "cache" files remain), more than 800 files are in the Recycle bin. So shouldn't I select something other than "Replace" Or should I first restore the files currently sitting in the Recycle bin, and then 'Replace'?

After 6 hours of unsuccessfully trying to contact Lavasoft's "technical support" only to find out that apparently their technical background is extremely basic, and even after one tech tried to get me to pay an additional fee for some "deep cleaning" service, I came across my own solution:

1. Download the 32 or 64-bit manual definitions depending on your operating system.

2. Extract them to a folder or your desktop.

3. Uninstall Ad-Aware.

4. Restart your computer.

5. Install Ad-Aware. Once the instal is complete ** do not ** open the software.

6. Navigate to the folder you extracted in Step 2 containing the definitions.

7. Select the "Plugins" folder.

8. Copy the folder.

9. Navigate to your installation folder for Ad-Aware ("C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware Antivirus" is the default location for Windows 7).

10. Open the "Antimalware Engine" folder.

11. Open the "2.6.0.0" folder.

12. Paste the copied "Plugins" folder.

13. If prompted for Administrator approval, hit "okay/allow".

14. Restart your computer.

15. Open Ad-Aware, if prompted for your license key, enter it on that screen.

16. Rejoyce!

Hi ma-p,

Do you mean that you can't find the folder C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware Antivirus\Antimalware Engine\2.6.0.0\Plugins or which file can't you find?

You should be able to find the "Windows Explorer" program in the start menu, you can also use "My computer", "This Computer", "Computer" or similar name depending on Windows version.

Hi WGel44,

When there is no file with the same name in the Ad-Aware Plugins folder, Windows will paste the file without asking a question. Windows will only ask a question when you try to paste a file with the same name as an existing file. Since you usually can't delete all the files, you will get a question about a few files, and those files should be replaced.

No need to restore any files from the Recycle bin.

Hi Cecilia B ,

I followed your advice on C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\...... and deleted as many files as it allowed , but it didn't work after that and still gave me error , so I ended up with no definition files at all , so I uninstalled Ad-Aware completely and then re-installed it again and put in my 25 digit activation number , but still tells me in red " protection inactive " .

Any suggestion as to what to do now?

Thanks
