Recurring installer for Lavasoft Web Companion

Question

Hi,

Can you tell me where the installer files might be located? Whenever I go onto my browser I get an installer for Lavasoft Web Companion come up. I DO NOT WANT THIS PRODUCT. How do I delete this installer? I also have no clue where it came from and understand that you brand yourself as an antivirus...yet work a lot like a virus.

Hi pip,

Web Companion is usually installed by another program that you installed by yourself.

Let us see how Web Companion has affected your computer and how to remove it:

Please, download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) and save it on the desktop:
For 64 bits Windows: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FRST64.exe
For 32 bits Windows: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FRST.exe

Double click FRST file to run the tool.
Read the disclaimer and click Yes to accept it.
Click Scan button.

When done, FRST will create two (2) logs on the desktop:

  • FRST.txt
  • Addition.txt

Please, attach them to your reply.

I can't do this until this evening, however I am very concerned that me stopping this Lavasoft Installer from popping up each time I open my browser requires downloading something else, especially something that is used to remove viruses. Do you not think this suggests something very invasive and problematic with Web Companion?

It hasn't been installed, it constantly keeps trying to install itself and I would like to know where this file is located so I can remove it without it installing. If you can provide me with a list of partners you have become bloatware with, I can try and do it myself?

FRST is a general purpose tool to find out running processes, a lot of registry entries for automatically starting programs, drivers etc., browser settings and add-ons, and files that has been added or modified during the last month. It's often used for removal of malware and adware, but can be used to remove all kinds of programs, files, folders etc. It's a tool that I'm familiar with and it's easy to handle in a forum, that's all.

Since you say the installer starts when you start the browser, please check the list of add-ons in the browser and its settings regarding search engines. The installer itself maybe is located in a temporary folder, e.g. C:\Windows\Temp, or in C:\Windows\Installer.

Sorry, I don't have access to partners since I'm a volunteer and not paid by adaware software. I've a contact person for questions regarding Web Companion but it usually takes several days to get an answer. In another topic I could see that Web Companion was installed by uTorrent.
