When someone suddenly starts to receive a lot more of spams, it usually due to:

  1. The person has written the email address on a public web page, as in a forum, on Facebook, Twitter etc.
  2. A friend of the person has done the above.
  3. A web site, where the person has registered with the email address, has been hacked and someone else has been able to fetch the email addresses.
  4. The email account of a friend has been hacked and someone else has been able to read all contacts of the friend.

When email addresses are found by someone with criminal intent, they are usually sold to a spammer or a spammer organization.

#3 in the list can sometimes be checked by entering the email address on the web page https://haveibeenpwned.com/ where a person tries to track email addresses sold or published on the dark web.

Unfortunately an antivirus program cannot protect you from such events.

You can read about how email addresses can be collected here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_address_harvesting
