I mean your instructions as to how to get rid of extremely difficult malware were from 2008. Are they still accurate?

When I clicked on the link it looked like another thing to download that was going to attack me.

Yes, FRST is still a very good tool to find out what's going on the computer. The tool has been extended during all these years so it's much better now than when it was released.

This is a direct link to the download (64 bit version): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/dl/82/

Which program is blocking the download and what is the message exactly?

FRST is one of very few tools that will let me see what's going on in your computer. But if you prefer that you can try to use AdwCleaner yourself: https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

If AdwCleaner isn't enough, I must see what's going on in the computer and you need to run FRST.

Please, disable Norton to make sure it isn't blocking FRST.

Try the suggestion in the answer here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/windows-found-that-this-file-is-potentially/cab2b576-2074-4b26-bf54-571fe03f9ef8

That seems unrelated. I noticed that every popup has "notification-centar.com" on it.

It does seem like Norton is disabled.  Could Windows Defender be stopping it?

In the linked topic it¨s Windows itself that stops the execution of the file. I think that Defender would put the file in quarantine if it thinks it's dangerous.

You can try to run FRST in safe mode since Defender is disabled in safe mode.

Thanks.

I can see that you've several antivirus programs installed and they can disturb each other and then the computer will be less secure. You need to select Adaware antivirus or McAfee antivirus.

Please uninstall Total AV (not a good antivirus).

Restart the computer and run these programs to remove left-overs of the uninstallations:

Restart the computer again.

Please turn off Web notifications for all sites in Edge: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/50987-turn-off-web-notifications-sites-microsoft-edge.html
To be sure that it isn't such notifications that you see. Or do you use another browser most of the time?

If you still have the same problem, please take a screenshot e.g. by using Snipping Tool of the ad: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13776/windows-10-use-snipping-tool-to-capture-screenshots
and run FRST again with as few programs running as possible.

Please attach both FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
