jurgenv 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2006 1. Configure the computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For information about how to do this, see your computer documentation, or contact your computer manufacturer. 2. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. 3. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM. 4. No I did not make a backup. If I had would it not have saved the problem as well? Thanks Regards Rob.
jurgenv 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 1. Download this file - combofix.exe 2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. 3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log. Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
LS CalamityJane 13 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 This PC came with no disc and the manufacturer charged £1 a minute and kept me waiting for a tolal of 32 minutes and still did not give me usable answer. No I did not make a backup. If I had would it not have saved the problem as well? Thanks Regards Rob. Pardon the interruption, Rob, that question begs an answer here. A backup is always advised when editing the registry. Why? While it might restore the original problem, it could be that you also incorrectly edited something vital in your registry and if you had a point to go back to where the operating system was working, one could then isolate the original problem and do a correct fix even if it meant to start over to remove the spyware problem. Having no backup of the Registry before using that cleaner is, in essence, a point of no return. Not having the disks to reinstall or recover your windows installation and/or missing or corrupted files is also a problem. The error messages you are getting are not necessarily a result of spyware/malware presence but rather a problem in the configuration of your operating system. System restore is not a substitute for adequate backups. It only restores certain things because it doesn't back up your entire system or even the entire registry. The registry is the central storage for all computer configuration data. The Windows system configuration, the computer hardware configuration, information about installed programs, the types of documents that each program can create, and user preferences are all stored in the registry. Windows continually references this information during its operation Using Registry Editor (or any registry cleaning tool) incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft states that it cannot guarantee that problems that result from incorrect use of a registry editor can be solved and advises Use of any registry editor at your own risk. And that includes the Registry cleaner you have there. It may have incorrectly done something to your registry and we would have no idea what that was. We have tools we can use to find and fix spyware problems, but using other products such as the regsitry cleaner with no backups - we may not be able to find answers for that. Robbo 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2006 Hi, As I believe I mentioned in the begining and you may have noticed during the discourse of this topic I am not very conversent with the "troubleshooting " of PCs. I have no doubt, in some instances, not done things correctly, although I have learnt a few things, as My Pc may work or the instruction actions may have differed from instructions given to me by my "helper" on this site. I have nothing but admiration for the whole team who give their time voluntarily for free (I have made a small donation) in gratitude for this. I hold no grudges or place no blame and as I mentioned I am extremely grateful for the help and support I have recieved but I have had to resort to a professional in personal attendance to help solve my problem. At the moment my PC is working Perfectly, although as you mentioned , they have been informed that there may still be something lurking deep within the registry or whatever. May I thank you kindly for all your time and trouble and help. I guess this is the end of this Topic. Warmest Regards Rob
