Here is the "Open Hosts File Manager" log:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.

#

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

#

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# space.

#

# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

Also, in your last post you instructed me to:

"Open Internet Explorer and choose the *Tools* tab and then press *reset websettings*"

I am not sure what this is referring to as I could not find anything in the tools tab of IE that said "reset websettings". What I did was go into Internet Options from the Tools tab and changed the homepage. I was able to do everything else you asked me to do fine. IE is still not navigating to any pages.

Maybe clearing the TIF (cache). Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr

Wait while windows scans your system for files to delete.

When it finishes it will present a list.

Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them

Temporary Files

Temporary Internet Files

Recycle bin

........................................................

Under *tools* > *Internet Options* choose the "Connections Tab" and then "Local Area Network (LAN) settings"

If Proxy Server is checkmarked, uncheck it.

................................

If still no joy:

Download: DelDomains.inf

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click the link above and select: Save Target As (IE only)

In firefox choose *Save link as* this will open up the download box. Save DelDomains.inf it to your desktop

To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart - there is no on-screen action)

Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also. DelDomains was revised (01-16-05) to include the "Enhanced Security Configuration Zones" as some of these newer infections are targeting the "Enhanced" Zone.

Performed the above and...Still no luck. IE explorer will still not navigate--it is still performing as I described above except it does not load to the about:blank page (we reset that).

I am stumped! :)

I'll try googling around and see if I can come up with some other ideas. It just seems like a DNS problem. Your did flush the DNS cache, right? Check your connection settings in Internet Options?

I'm not sure what flushing DNS cache is, but if that was one of the things in the last post then I did it. I did check the connection settings in Internet options and under LAN settings "detect proxy server" is not checked and "automatically detect settings" is checked.

Ok! I consulted with another researcher, Tony Klein, who had some suggestions to try:

On the unable to "reset Web Settings":

1. On mine "Reset Web Settings" is right above "internet options" when you open the *Tools* tab

ResetWebSettings.gif

or

2. In Internet Options, look under the 'Programs' tab.

ResetWebSettings2.gif

From Tony: He could also try setting IE as default browser (Start > Set Program Access and Defaults. ) tHat will reset a couple of reg values to their defaults. See if that makes a difference.

And of course he should check all connection settings.

I've some other ideas too, have to go get some URLs though, so I'll be back. Let me know if any of the above works.

Couple more ideas:

IEFix - General purpose fix for Internet Explorer

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

(follow the directions on that page)

.............................................

Page Cannot be Found and/or DNS/Server Error (Line 68)

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/dns.reg

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

.............

Re: Trojan.Galapoper.A

From the NAV logs, do you have a file name and exact location (full path) for that?

I appreciate the continued effort on my stumper of a problem... I finally did find the "reset web settings" and have done that. As per Tony's suggestions, I set IE as defalt browser. No luck.

Re IEFIX:

When I ran this a window poped up that said:

"The file 'IEXPLOERE.EXE' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed. Type the path where it is located, and then click ok."

Where are these files located? On my Windows XP install CD? I just clicked cancel from that window and it said it completed, but no change in IE.

Re: Regedits

I downloaded it to my desktop and doubleclicked it. Then I right-clicked the same icon and went to edit and copy and pasted what was in the notepad (which is found below). Was that the correct way to do it?

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]

"NegativeCacheTime"=dword:00000000

"NetFailureCacheTime"=dword:00000000

"NegativeSOACacheTime"=dword:00000000

P.S. I am working on trying to get the Norton log. I will post it shortly.

The 'norton antivirus' log for "security risks" is too long for this forum. Where can I post it or send it? Also, there are other logs under the categories 'norton internet security' and 'symantic resource protector'. there's about a dozen logs; besides "security risks" there are three logs "Alerts" and "Intrusion Detection" and "system" that seem important looking to me. Do you want these logs?

Ok, let me answer these one at a time.

If SP2 came pre-loaded on your computer, then yes, use the install CD.

If it did not, and you don't have a CD with SP2 on it, then forget that.

( I don't need the rightclick and notepad bit.)

But when you first doubleclick on it that a left doubleclick, correct? And it asked you in a prompt if you want to merge to the registry, so Answer Yes (or OK) Did you get that prompt? and answer yes? If so, then it ran ok.

It looks like the only one I'd be interested in is Alerts. Can you attach that one in a zip file?

If not, I can use a tool to check your system.

.........................

Ok, one more thought on the IE problem. I assume it's still a problem.

Open HijackThis and scan. Checkmark this entry in the list and then press *fix checked*

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

Restating my problem:

IE explorer not navigating has been my only symptom for a while. The nature the problem makes me think there is still some bad infection. To restate, here's what is happening:

When I try to navigate to any webpage from IE it looks like it is loading normally and then after a few seconds Microsoft Internet Explorer message box comes up that says "Internet Explorer could not open the search page." When I close that message box IE displays a message that says "Downloading from site: res://C:\Win\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm". IE explorer will not navigate to any webpages.

A question: Could I just unistall IE and then reinstall it (I guess I do need it for Microsoft updates and the like)? Or would the infection still likely be there?

I did the "fix check" for the file "R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost"

in HiJackThis. Opened IE, still no luck.
